## How to teach Geometry using Mangahigh - transformations

Get your students engaged in transforming shapes using Mangahigh’s math game ‘TranStar’. Students start by reflecting and rotating shapes in space, dynamically seeing the results of their transformations. They progress onto positive, negative and fractional scale factor enlargement puzzles as they navigate their ‘TranStar’ through the galaxy.

## Lesson idea for teaching transformations

Example of blended learning lesson

Play through the first 4 level of ‘TranStar’ with the whole class on the whiteboard. This will introduce them to the basic principles of the game. Challenge the students to predict the outcome of each move in advance.
Set two ‘TranStar’ activities to your class called ‘Reflections, rotations & translations - TranStar’ and ‘Introducing integer/fractional enlargements - TranStar’. Move through the class offering help where needed and challenge students to explain their choices. Use your Mangahigh analytics platform to check progress and support struggling students.
What have they learnt about transformations? What type of questions have they seen? What would harder transformation questions look like?
Students return to the ‘TranStar’ activities. For the most able, set an additional activity ‘Advanced composition: all types - TranStar’. Use your Mangahigh analytics platform to identify any students who have struggled with the first activity ‘Reflections, rotations & translations - TranStar’ and support them or encourage them to work with their peers.
Draw these graphs on the board and ask the students to write down the steps of transformations needed to solve the image.

## How to teach Geometry using Mangahigh - recognize regular polygons

Introduce your students to regular polygons through the use of Mangahigh’s adaptive quiz ‘Recognize regular polygons’. Students will start with ‘Easy’ questions to help introduce new ideas and then move onto ‘Medium’ questions with some scaffolded support. Students then progress onto ‘Hard’ questions that really test their understanding, and the most able will move on to ‘Extreme’ questions that will challenge even the brightest students.

## Lesson idea for teaching recognising polygons

Example of blended learning lesson

On the whiteboard draw a regular hexagon and an irregular hexagon and a circle. Discuss what the differences are between the shapes and what properties makes a regular polygon.
Set the Mangahigh activity ‘Recognize regular polygons’. Each time students play through the activity they will answer 10 questions. Encourage students to make at least three attempts, i.e. attempt at least 30 questions. Students will receive a bronze medal award and thus demonstrate they have a secure understanding if they can prove their competency at the hard questions. The most able students might achieve a silver or gold medal by answering extreme questions. Move through the class offering help where needed and challenge students to explain their solutions. Use your Mangahigh analytics platform to check progress and support struggling students.

Identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces.

Follow and give instructions involving position, direction and movement.

### Basic Angle Rules

Use angles at a right angle and use perpendicular lines. Spot right angles of any orientation on a square grid. Understand the term complementary angles. Also use the rule that angles on a straight line at a specific point sum to 180. Solve problems involving straight line angles. Understand the term supplementary angles. Also use the rule that angles at a point sum to 360. Known as a full turn.

### Recognize congruent shapes

Know the definition of congruence and say if 2 shapes are congruent, simple shapes only.

### Use Pythagoras' Theorem To Find The Hypotenuse

Use Pythagoras theorem in 2D to find the hypotenuse in a right angled triangle using the lengths of the other two sides. Understand a picture proof of the theorem. Include practical problems e.g. ladders and walls.

### The Identity tan(x) = sin(x) / cos(x)

Use the identity tanx = sinx / cosx to prove other identities or solve problems.
